Since the goal is transparency, not villainizing AI, I landed on a lighthearted "Spot the Difference" illustration.&nbsp;The illustration is there to reinforce Substack’s point of view: It's a tool for noticing the differences, not judging them. There isn't a right or wrong side. The left side represents human writing: people reading, thinking, revising, doodling, and filling up the trash can with discarded drafts. The "TKTK" placeholder hints that the work is still in progress. (The Odyssey book made it in too, Nolan's movie was just released.) The right side represents AI writing: a single button that instantly generates text, the classic AI opener "Certainly! Here's why…", and an empty trash can, since there wasn't much of a writing process to throw away.Making people hunt for tiny hidden details was probably my favorite part of this project. When the creators own their relationships with their audiences directly, no platform or algorithm can suddenly cut them off from their community. That sense of ownership translates into a sustainable income that doesn't depend on algorithmic whims or viral trends. We later created a short video expanding on the idea of a quiet, peaceful corner bookstore amidst a chaotic street. One particularly touching user comment even reinterpreted the story beautifully in text, noting every easter egg we had hidden in the video. “I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of a world where fire-breathing dragons interrupt our bedroom reading, garbage-eating crocodiles rule the streets, and you can’t put an Easter Island statue outside your house without the neighbours burning your place to the ground. I’m tired of a world where you get mobbed and bystanders are too chicken to do anything, where you get attacked just for taking your duck-that-thinks-its-a-dog out for a walk, a world where someone new moves into the neighbourhood and everyone wants to bite his head off just because he’s a carnivore. I want to live in a world where cranes are made of paper, lucky cat can wave to Buzz Aldrin, and all mushrooms are magic. A world where Earth is only one of the many books on the shelf, and it’s just a short step ladder to the moon. And, I promise you, when we reach this new land, we will hear the sweet sound of birds. Every year, all the employees gather together to celebrate what we accomplished as a team in the past year and to commemorate the company’s anniversary. Being an in-house designer, I not only witness how the company evolves through time, but also grow together with the company and develop the brand around. When I first joined Substack in 2021, it was a 20 people startup. In 2021, we had a close friend and family style party, it was a cozy and homy party. We were also still at the exploration stage with our visuals. The platform aims to provide a better writing and reading environment by paid subscription, a different business model than advertisement, where readers pay directly for writers they love. Writers are freed up from the click-based writing style, being able to write without many constraints or worries by the support of their readers. Readers also have control over what they read instead of being fed by algorithm-based content feed. The employee welcome box was designed in 2021 when Substack was at its 3rd year and with around 30 employees. The company made effort in putting writers upfront with very little Substack brand involved in the expereince. Most users know the writers they support but not necessarily the platform behind. We make it so that the brand is not too intrusive and attention drawing, but softly plays an important role in people’s life. To connect with the concept of writing and reading, the box is designed as a big book, with a cover, a forward page, and a copyright page with an easter egg in the ISBN. The bookmarks are designed as library cards with some recommended readings from the founding team.
